When I started my own site late in the last millennium (‘97), I was perfectly happy with the deal that my Internet Service Provider offered – a few megs of storage for my site files, plus a modest amount of monthly traffic. Then, over the next few years, as site content grew and the number of visitors increased consistently, the site started straining at the seams. I moved the site to CVO.CA, a local (Ottawa) web hosting service, because I wanted to be a good, patriotic webmaster by buying Canadian. It was also nice to know that the folks who take care of my account were just a short drive from my home.
Oh yeah?
As it turns out, I discovered that my website files were physically located in a server farm somewhere in Florida. The nice folks at CVO.CA told me that they had to have an office in the states in order to do business South of the border. So much for patriotism…
In the summer of 2004, I opened an account with Total Choice Hosting, and that has proven to be a very good choice indeed — my “Starter Plan” account costs me $44 (U.S.) per year for 700MB of server space and 20GB of traffic, and Total Choice offers a wide range of “features” and add-ons along with an exceptional member forum. And what a price! Quite different from my old outfit, which was charging me $20 (Cd.) per MONTH for 100MB storage and 6GB traffic.
I highly recommend Total Choice Hosting for any person or organization looking for inexpensive hosting and excellent service!
if you are reall looking for inexpensive great hosting look at http://www.dots4less.com this site offers free hosting with domain name registration as well as shared hosting for as little as 7.95 per month. Dedicated server as low as $79.95 per month. Why pay more and get less services that they offer!
OK, I guess I had that one coming.
Sure, there are many free* web hosting packages out there — here’s a link to a Google search result for “free web hosting”:

*I guess even the word “free” is open to interpretation — as a time-limited promo, dots4less.com is reducing their “one-time” setup fee from $19.95 to $10.95.
After you pay THAT, it’s free.
Call it semantics, if you will.
I call it “not-the-whole-truth” advertising.

You're bound to find some spiffy deals if you're looking for the cheapest way to create a web presence for yourself or your group/company. I haven't tested out Guy R.'s recommended Dots4less.com service, and it may be perfectly acceptable and more inexpensive than Total Choice Hosting. I'm simply recommending a service that I considered very recommendable.
Please note that in this blog, I don't intend to get into a debate about the relative merits of this hosting service over that one. I've approved Guy R's comment for posting to the blog as is, but I don't plan on OK'ing any further comments, many of which might be viewed as thinly-veiled promos for other similar-but-cheaper services. I have to approve every comment before you see it, and I *will* use that authority to keep the content of my blog under control...
I'm still recommending Total Choice Hosting service, from my personal experience --- see their forum for more info and feedback from contented users: http://www.totalchoicehosting.com/forums/
